Lakes Delavan and Como - February 22, 2020
Six club members and one guest fished a disappointing outing on February 22. The original plan was to fish the southwest end of Lake Delavan. However, the first guys arrived almost an hour early to find the parking was already full and there were so many vehicles milling around the police had to show up. Time for Plan B.
We drove to Community Park off of Hwy 50 on the northeast end of the lake. None of us had an ice fishing report for this end of the lake, but we walked about 200 yards down the shore to a spot where we have success in the summer and fall. Unfortunately, the fish either weren’t there or weren’t biting. Every one of us had tip-ups set out and was jigging for panfish. But, after almost two hours not one of us had a single bite, and we hadn’t seen anyone else around us catch a fish. Time for Plan C.
A ten minute drive later and we were parked on the north end of Lake Como. It’s shallow and weedy up there, so we had to walk quite a way to get to a decent area to fish. This is primarily a northern pike and largemouth bass lake, so we set out a full spread of tip-ups. The action at Como turned out to be a little better than Delavan, but not by much. Five flags went up, but only one small pike was iced. A very disappointing end to our ice season. Still, we found Lake Como to be interesting and several of us are thinking about fishing it again this summer.
The club’s next outing will be the spring walleye run at the end of March in the Fox River at DePere, WI. The fishing is usually excellent there, and it is one of our most anticipated trips of the year!
